A recurring dream in which Henry Rollins punches me in the face.

Posted on July 14th, 2008

I like Black Flag. They’re not my favourite punk/hardcore band, but I definitely respect them. I treat them the same way I do Led Zeppelin. I understand that they’re good, why they’re held in such esteem in their genre. I own a few records, the major pieces. You know, I wouldn’t travel across the country to see them reunite, (especially if it’s in Toronto), but I’ll rock out to “Rise Above” if iTunes hits in in shuffle mode.

I bring up Black Flag due to the recent events in my mindchamber, where in which I have apparitions of assault courtesy of one Henry Theodore Rollins.

Henry Rollins is a scary man. Sure, he’s north of forty, balding with patches of grey hair and no longer poses as much a threat when shirtless as he did in 1982. But he could still kick my ass.

Henry has seen some shit . He is an angry , opinionated man. And he knows good music .

(I’ll give you a moment.)

Back? Okay, you can see, not only through story and song, that Mr. Rollins’ shrill, angry rasp is enough to make many an asshole quiver.

So I have this dream, I’d say bi-monthly, in which I’m attending an event. A party, a movie, whatever. Something goes awry, and all of a sudden I’m getting into an argument with Henry Rollins. It seems to come about innocently enough, via a faux pas or misunderstanding. My respect for Rollins is prevalent, but he will have none of my fawning. He simply wants justice and begins to beat me up.

Sometimes it’s straight right jabs to the face. I take a few, fall down, and everyone around laughs. Other times he’ll mount me and just bust my jaw in with elbows. Once, Rollins grabbed a broom and rubbed it against my face until I cried. I don’t fight back- I’m not strong enough. Any other punk rocker I could take… Iggy would tough but he lacks the stamina. Pete Shelley isn’t even a fight. Danzig has the muscle but he’s 53 years old. Plus he’d be too busy putting on black face paint; I’d blindside him with a shovel and move on to Dee Dee Ramone.

Nevertheless it’s a traumatic experience and I am often humiliated in front of friends and loved ones by the lead singer of a pioneering punk band.

I’ve searched for deeper meaning, a common theme surrounding the events prior to the night’s dream. So far I’ve come up empty handed. I pose to you, loyal bobandandrew.com readers, the question:

What does it all mean?

It means that God sees you when you’re touching yourself, and he doesn’t like it.

Never cared much for Black Flag or the Rollins Band, but I’ve seen Hank’s spoken word shows twice and I have about 5 or 6 of his spoken word albums. He makes you laugh and think. He rocks.

And his tattoos are kind of scary.

I think you’re in love with Henry Rollins, and you like it rough in the sack.

I think the answer is routed deeply in the subconscious…. obviously this is the first person in your life that you truly, 100% respect, and as such you feel like you are losing your grip on reality – i mean, could you start to respect others? Could this become a regular occurance? What a scary thought! So your own mind is trying to protect you from it by kicking your own ass …. making you interpret it as FEAR instead of RESPECT….

Either that or you are probably about to the wet the bed and Henry Rollins kicks your ass for even thinking it.
